WORKSHOP 5/02 : Natural Dye with Kristen Chiu
Natural dye practices aim to combat the overuse of harsh chemical materials in the fashion and textile industries. In this workshop, Kristen will go over the fundamentals of at-home dye techniques with an emphasis on bundle dyeing with materials including flowers, plants, spices, and food waste. Bundle dyeing is a technique that involves placing plant materials, such as flowers, leaves, and herbs, onto fabric, then tightly wrapping or folding the fabric into a bundle. This bundle is then steamed or heated to transfer the pigments and colors from the plant materials onto the fabric, creating unique and often intricate designs.
All dye materials will be provided along with scrap fabric pieces to experiment on, but students are welcome to bring a garment or piece of fabric from home—This can be anything as long as it’s a natural material such as cotton, silk, or wool.
This workshop will give participants a chance to get their hands dirty and take home a uniquely hand-dyed piece using materials from the Earth. It is a space to offer tangible connection to the Earth through the utilization of food waste and plant materials. We seek to teach practical applications that students can carry from studio to at-home practice.
