MAR 27 • We Grow From the Soil – Kamala Ibrahim Ishaq by Sarah Elawad
Knowledge Share + Workshop
This is the second of three events that will center Henna, Art, and Sudan. The first event is the henna kit launch on March 13 and the last will be a film screening and panel discussion on April 10.
Join us to discuss the work of Kamala Ibrahim Ishaq, a Sudanese painter and art teacher, known as one of the founders of The Crystalist conceptual art group in Khartoum. This group rejected common conventions in Sudanese modern painting of the 1960s and strived to find "an aesthetic and critical language that would emphasise the notions of pleasure and knowledge in order to permanently abolish differences and boundaries". Based on her artistic career spanning more than fifty years, Ishaq has been called one of the most important visual artists in Africa.
The world of nature is rich in forms, and unlimited aesthetic possibilities… I believe vegetation and humans are one and the same. We grow from the soil. We eat plants for sustenance, we die and we are buried. We eventually become sustenance for plants. I consider these plants [in my garden] an extension of me.
– Ishaq
Using Henna, a natural plant dye, we will create our own art pieces taking inspiration from the art and life of the Sudanese Artist Kamala Ibrahim Ishaq.
