MAY 3 • LAUNCH + WORKSHOP : Second Edition of Photographs from Yemen

Join us for a special gathering to celebrate the launch of the second edition of Photography from Yemen by Makan Press. This event is part art workshop, part conversation, and part celebration.

Artist and publisher Ibi Ibrahim will lead a postcard making workshop that highlights the representation of place and the architecture of displacement. The postcards crafted will aim to honor the themes discussed in the publication Photography from Yemen; bridging art, identity and representation. In this workshop, Ibrahim will be sharing Yemeni stamps from his own personal collection as well as Photography books on Yemen from his personal library. The presence of the postcards and publications could serve as an inspiration to the workshop participants in the crafting of their postcards.

We’ll begin with a brief reflection on the book and its impact so far, before exploring the stamp collection and publications on view. Participants will then be invited to create their own postcards, drawing from the materials and themes of place and displacement that run through the work. The workshop is optional, and attendees are welcome to hang out, mingle, and enjoy the event at their own pace.

This event is also a moment to recognize Makan Press—recent recipient of the Shannon Michael Cane Award for Emerging Publishers—and to celebrate the stories, images, and voices it continues to uplift since the launch of the book at STORM back in September 2024!
