MAY 7 • WRITING WORKSHOP – Journaling as Resistance #2

Journaling as Resistance is a series of workshops exploring the intersections of internal accountability, decolonial repair, and global solidarity through journaling and somatic practices.

Journaling as Resistance #2 offers an expanded exploration for deepening our voices, one that “uplifts a space to practice listening beyond our ability to hear” (A.P. Gumbs) and nurtures the seeds of our “erotic knowledge” (A. Lorde). How does it feel when we dare to be powerful? And how do we recognize when it feels right, so we can bring more of our whole selves into our relationships, learning to speak our truth with vulnerability and integrity?

In this workshop, we will continue our conversation through a combination of practicing listening, collective reflection, and body-mind centered practices. We will engage with new materials and prompts, diving deeper into themes inspired by Alexis Pauline Gumbs' Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Animals and Audre Lorde’s Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power. We will also weave in the voice of Ocean Vuong, exploring excerpts from On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous as we journal from an autobiographical perspective, bringing those reflections into our lives. All of this will encourage us to listen more closely to our bodies, our breath, and the wisdom of the collective.

Within the session, the journaling prompts and somatic exercises will evolve, inviting you to engage with your inner landscape in a generative way, supported by the grounding presence of the group and the powerful material we explore together.

Somatic practices bridge personal healing with systemic transformation. When combined with journaling, they nourish self-reflection, help us embody the change we seek, support us through discomfort and growth, and empower us to engage with the world more authentically and compassionately. We hope these practices can serve as vessels—for resistance to systemic oppression, for healing, and for connection.
*We recognize that not everyone has the capacity for hearing or writing, and we want to honor that we are all in different places within a harmful, ableist, and predatory world. While we won’t have sign language available for this workshop, we hope to extend these offerings to a larger public in the future, ensuring greater accessibility through various journaling explorations and practices.
