July 24: Paper Marbling with Maggie Paxton

Join us for an introductory class on paper marbling with Maggie Paxton. Participants will learn the basics of marbling paper using acrylic paint and look into some of the history of this decorative art form. Marbling involves floating colors on water and transferring designs onto paper. After learning the basic techniques, Maggie will guide us through figural marbling to create intricate designs like poppy flowers, birds, and other imaginative shapes and patterns.

The art of paper marbling dates back to the 12th century in Japan, where it was known as "suminagashi" or "floating ink." By the 16th century, similar techniques had spread to Persia and Turkey, where it adorned important manuscripts such as Qurans, book covers, and official documents. Today, marbled patterns also decorate stationery, boxes, and textiles, offering endless possibilities.

Maggie Paxton is a Greenpoint-based designer who incorporates a variety of practices into her work, including marbling, shoemaking, hand-crochet, and natural dyeing.

Parts of proceeds will go towards a Gaza mutual aid fundraiser.
