May 12 • WORKSHOP : Ancestral Plants of Palestine with Michelle Nazzal
Ancestral Plants of Palestine, led by Michelle Nazzal, is an introduction to wild plants from the region, focusing on their culinary traditions. This 2-hour workshop will highlight wild plants, folklore, recipes and Palestinian land practices, while exploring how these traditions are threatened under violent occupation.
Participants will interact with some of these plants in person and create their own handmade za’atar blend, alongside receiving a recipe zine, limited edition print, heirloom seeds, and resource materials for continued education. With a focus on Palestine, participants will leave with a reframed relationship to food, forging a deeper connection to the land and the people it comes from.
Michelle Nazzal is the Oakland-based Palestinian-American chef and artist behind the Palestinian pop-up Mishmish Souq, and most recently, Nafas, a food story telling collective that aims to shake off western misrepresentation and claim the right to represent Arab stories through an educational and archival effort.
